This is the sign that welcomes you to Karana Kelpie Stud. Kay and I would like to welcome you to our web site and hope that you enjoy learning about our great dogs, we are very proud of the quality we have developed in our dogs over the last 21 years. This is evidenced in the depth of the number of good dogs we compete with all with our own Stud Prefix.

Until recently we ran a 2000 head merino sheep farm with 50 beef cattle as well as growing 250 acres of wheat in the central west of New South Wales Australia.

In 2005 we sold the better wheat farming country to semi retire to concentrate on the Kelpie Dog Stud.

I have been working in the Forbes Stock Selling Yards for a number of years with my dogs as a stockman which I will continue to do.

We still have 900 acres of some grazing and some hill country running 250 sheep for dog training purposes, this gives the dogs a good variety of work as in the hill country the dogs have to work out of sight and rely on their natural instincts without any instructions from me to bring the sheep out to me, they then take the sheep home in a drive situation to the yards where they then do the yard and shed work.
The work in the sale yards involves long hours of hard work by the dogs handling many thousands of sheep some in small mobs and some mobs as big as 2000 head.

Our Aims
Our aim is to breed top quality utility type Kelpies with an athletic build, good stamina and a friendly easy handling temperament that will work well in the yard and shed and have a good long wide cast in the paddock.

We believe we are one of a few breeders breeding dogs with a good cast as well as having a positive attitude in the yards.

Duke Hard at Work with no time to spare. A total yarding of 30,000 mostly prime lambs this day .Which have to be prepared and penned by 11 am for sale and once sold they then have to be counted again and delivered to their individual buyers holding pens.

Although we trial our dogs for sport as well as to prove their ability against other dogs, they must firstly be tough work dogs, A dog must work well in both the paddock and yard to be considered a good dog by me.

I believe that if you do not compete you cannot compare your dog’s ability with others and we like to do this to know we are breeding the best dog for all situations.

In the Beginning - Karana Seiko
Even though we always had dogs to get our stock work done, it really all started with Seiko. Without Seiko this Stud would not be what it is today!

Even though I had worked with dogs since I was 15 years old (these were cross bred farm dogs). When Seiko came along he showed me how a quality dog can handle sheep or cattle in a calm strong way with ease without upsetting the stock or causing any stress. He taught me a lot. This is what I use as selection criteria today when selecting a pup to keep in the Stud.

He was a very calm self confident dog, very strong and highly intelligent. He was my mate.
